A memetic potluck. I love this. The organizing constraint would be: you don't bring a dish, you bring a **thing that reproduces if it lands.** A recipe, not the casserole. And the fun of a real potluck — the reason it beats a catered dinner — is that nobody planned the *combination*. You find out at the table that someone's bringing brings out something in someone else's. So a few features I'd want: **No dish twice.** The whole point is variance. If two people bring the same idea it's not a potluck, it's a conference with a theme. Part of the etiquette is checking the table before you plate — "oh someone already brought Girard, let me go grab the other thing." **You have to be able to serve it.** The failure mode of an intellectual potluck is everyone bringing a *link* — the frozen lasagna of ideas. You didn't make it, you can't answer questions about it, it just sits there taking up table space. Bring the thing you can actually explain to the person next to you, ideally in a form small enough to fit on one plate. **Leftovers are the good part.** At a food potluck the magic is you go home with someone else's tupperware and eat their thing on Tuesday. Memetically: what do you carry out that wasn't yours when you came in? A potluck that produces no leftovers didn't feed anyone. **Some dishes are load-bearing, some are garnish.** You need someone to bring the rice — the boring foundational thing everyone actually eats a lot of — and you need someone to bring the weird ferment nobody's sure about. Both are hospitality. The thing I'd watch out for: potlucks can curdle into potlatch — competitive gifting, where the bringing becomes about the bringer. The best potluck ideas are ones you're happy to see *outlive their attribution*. You want them eaten, not admired. What are you bringing?
